To ensure their haven would stand out from the pack, they chose an Australian theme to fit the relaxed but lively mood of their ideal restaurant. The very first Outback Steakhouse opened in March ’88 in Tampa. They’ve stood by their “No Rules, Just Right” mentality: Outback Steakhouse’s team takes food seriously, without forgetting any of the fun, knowing that nothing stands in the way of making you happy.

We don’t often go to Outback Steakhouse because they just don’t seem to have any stand-out offerings. We recently had dinner there with some friends and my overall opinion remains the same: Fair but not great.

I had the featured bloomin’ fried shrimp appetizer, which was large enough for a meal. It came with their “signature” spicy dipping sauce that seemed to be horseradish based. The shrimp were tasty but heavily fried. Next time I’d consider the grilled shrimp instead.

My wife had the grilled chicken breast with BBQ sauce. It comes with a choice of 2 sides, and she had the fries and potato soup. The chicken wasn’t particularly flavorful and the fries were just average. She was expecting better seasoning… or at least some seasoning. The soup was excellent: creamy and full of potatoes and shredded cheese on top.

One friend enjoyed the Alice Springs chicken, which is a grilled chicken breast with mushrooms, bacon, cheese and a honey mustard sauce. He thought the flavors blended well and he would definitely order this entree again. He had a side of the Tasmanian chili, which lived up to its spicy billing. It was robust and filled with chunks of steak.

Another friend had the shrimp and chicken pasta. Quite a large portion! She thought it was quite tasty although the alfredo sauce was a bit heavy.

The waiter was very friendly and attentive. He stopped by several times to check on us and offered useful suggestions about the entrees and sides.

Outback is pretty much what you’d expect from a medium-priced chain steakhouse. Too much focus on clever names and marketing and not enough focus on really good food.

The food was 3 1/2 stars and the xtra 1/2 star was for our server/bartender Amanda. She was patient and proficient as well as good natured even after I realized I had ordered the wrong thing and changed it.

We just came for lunch. We were using the balance of a gift certificate (thank you Max!) plus I am a Dine Rewards member so i was also building points.

Their lunch specials are only during the week Monday through Friday, but that wasn’t a problem. We just ordered what we wanted from their regular menu (QR code or actual).

He was in the mood for soup and salad so he got their French onion soup (it was good and cheesy) and their blue cheese pecan salad (also good; I had some of his salad — this is my preferred salad here).

I just ordered their coconut shrimp appetizer. It doesn’t look like much on the plate but it was a nice sized serving, crispy fried shrimp coated in coconut. I even liked the orange marmalade dipping sauce served alongside.

The restaurant was relatively quiet on a Saturday afternoon and we had the bar to ourselves. During these Covid times, we feel much more comfortable with lots of space. Everything was spotless (even the ladies room) and all personnel were wearing masks. Quite a difference from when we were here more than ten years ago for a weekend dinner and they were packed. I’m sure dinner is much different even now compared to lunch vv crowds.

There’s plenty of parking in the lot outside. And a special door in the back to drive up to for takeout pickups. Looking forward to trying them sometime when I’m in the mood for steak…

We sat at the bar for dinner the two bartenders there were on the ball and made sure we had everything we needed. We both ordered the fillet and lobster which both were really good the only thing they had run out of big potatoes so I had to try the mashed potatoes I don’t know what they put in there maybe it was sour cream but it just had a flavor that did not wow me. Service from the kitchen was a little slow for dinner but overall was a good experience I’ve never really had a really bad experience at the outback. Loyal for Life

Valentines Day! We took out our dinner and everything went off without a hitch. I called early because I wanted Prime Rib but was told they would take the order but to come back at 2:30p and all would be ready. And it was. And it was cooked perfectly! My husband and I were very happy with our side dishes and the portions of our meals. What more can you ask for on the day of wine and roses! Thank you!
